This next school year will be the third year of me being a classroom teacher. It is strange to think about how fast the time went by and how much I have learned in a short 36 months.
My history as a teacher has become very colorful and enlightening to the world of academia. I started my career in education working for Quantum Learning Network in 2008. I travelled during the summers of my undergraduate career working accelerated academic learning programs; teaching strategies and character education to middle and high school students. I am still with them today and am teaching and mentoring students from middle school through college. I am very grateful for the opportunities that have arisen from working for QLN, I would not be the teacher I am today without their guidance and support.
In 2013 I was accepted and started the Linked Learning Credential at San Diego State University, a progressive Project Based Learning Cohort. I was placed at Clairemont high school with the wonderful Academy of Business team. My guide teacher allowed me to implement new ways of learning history in the classroom. Every week I would design an activity or game or reenactment that would allow students to move and interact with our previous week's content. The students were so bought in and our class was fun and exciting to be apart of every day. These students graduated in June of 2015, I was lucky enough to watch my first classes walk across the stage to graduate.
In the middle of my credential program a position opened at E3 Civic High. I was hired on full time during my credential to teach and continue my classes at night. After 5 months of full time teaching and night classes I graduated with my Social Science Credential from SDSU in 2014.
E3 and I went our separate ways at the end of the semester and I spent the 2014-2015 school year substitute teaching. It was one of the greatest learning experiences that I have had, I learned more about education subbing in a different classroom every day then I did teaching in my own classroom.
I will be teaching at O'Farrell Charter School for 8th grade US History. I am very excited to be able to teach history again and to be part of a team and a family dedicated to the students. I look forward to all the memories and learnings that I will gain from my new placement and hoping to make a change in my students lives.
My short time in education can be defined as; taking the road less travelled. I have stumbled and fallen, got back up and grown and moved forward. I have learned that the road less travelled shares it's rewards after you have been through it's obstacles. I am thankful for all my experiences and hope to grow into a empowering and dedicated leader in education.
