I am proposing a few different interventions for this week.
Teachers; Teachers will be asked to make a youtube video that could help the parents of the students in their classroom watch to have some additional support at home. This video could look like showing how to find the resources in which to help or showing how to actually do the work through examples. Teachers will also be working with the Admin to make sure that letters get sent out to parents when their son or daughter has a failing grade.
Leadership; We need to get more funding in order to provide additional classes for students who have failed a math class. The current program we have now for Freshmen who have failed implemented for later course will provide additional time for students to learn and increase their achievement in math. We could increase their skills and decrease non passing grades. Considering that for upperclassman we can offer the makeup class 7th period as well, since we offer the freshmen 1st period. We also need to send letters home to parents when their son or daughter is failing a class. Which means that teachers will have to be up to date on their grades in order to ensure that they know which students are passing.
Parents; We want to include more parent involvement. If their son or daughter is failing a math class we want to make sure that they have the resources to help out at home. We would also like to inform them of the resources (tutoring) that we can offer students before or after school.
Students; We want to make sure that they can succeed and can pass the class the first time. We want to make them accountable for their own grades and ensure that they seek help when they need it. Everyone will be informed of their progress so they will have plenty of support from teacher at school and parents at home.
At our school we already have one intervention yet we need to expand on it. Currently we have a class for Sophomores to retake Alg. I, if they failed it first or second semester of their Freshmen year. Like APEX which is an online credit recovery program, students move at their own pace and once they finish all of the work and pass the class the new grade replaces the old grade and thus it is like they never failed in the first place. What we need to do is expand this past just Freshmen Alg I. We have such a low percentage of students who are leaving the course with a proficient or advanced score that allowing students to try and redo the course for a higher grade could allow for increased achievability for not just the African American population but all of our students.
The second intervention we need to have is tutoring, currently we have the policy that tutoring is not and will not be mandatory for any student. I think that this is a good idea for we cannot force students to come to after school, we should encourage parents that if their student is failing math that there should be resources that they can use to help their grade. This could be done by a letter home as soon as the student falls below a 70% a letter from the school is sent home detailing which course and what resources are available.
Looking at the student information for some of our students they come from different neighborhoods. Some students have more wealth and affluence than others, which relates to students having different home lives. One of the things that we have seen in the data is that there is a correlation between parent education and standardized test scores. While we can not prove causation without further data and analysis, we think that being almost identical in numeracy is worth mentioning. One thing that I discussed with my VP is making youtube videos for parents, teaching them how they can help their son or daughter with their homework. I think that sometimes students are not able to get help at home from parents, partly because some parents don’t have a high school diploma. What we can do is a few things; offer the parents workshops for them to come to school and learn how to do some math in order to help their child. We could also hold a workshop showing parents how they can access and find the materials that they need in order to be more effective in helping their son or daughter.
All of our interventions are going to be school wide, since our target group is approximately 5% of the population we can’t offer programs solely to them. While the interventions we have in place would benefit all students we think that going school wide would result in higher math scores for our target group as well as the school.
For these interventions to be carried out we need time. Time for our math teachers to be able to construct and form the resources that will be needed for the parents and students, this time could be found during professional developments once a week. The math team could meet to discuss what is happening and what changes need to be made for students.
We need to spend more on postage and sending letters home to parents every week that their son or daughter is failing, or we could try email if we have enough emails on record as our population becomes more digital.
These interventions are pretty low on materials. 1. More funding to allow for students to take a make up class during their off period. 2. Sending email or letter home to parents from school informing of failing grade. 3. Gathering or constructing materials for parents to have more support at home, also providing workshops for parents to come in to get trainings. 4. Allowing math teachers time during PD to work on resources and other needs for materials that they need to provide.
Mainly we need to provide the teachers a stipend for their time. We have little to no materials if we can send emails. We just need to find a way to help the math team get their achievability up.
