First I think we throw the term leader around much to freely. There is a difference between a leader and a manager. A leader inspires and motivates those they lead to achieve goals, outcomes and plans because the leader leads people. A manager can get people to hit outcomes and goals because they make people do it. The difference comes from the mentality the one with power has; a leader thinks “I work for these people”, a manager thinks “These people work for me”. Working for a leader and worker for a manager are two very different things.
With that being said I am a Servant Leader. The people that matter the most are those that I serve and that serve me. I have had leadership experience and I always wanted to ensure that my staff had what they needed to be successful, I wanted to make sure that their needs were met and that they were able to perform at their best level. I think that this comes from a sense of respect that my staff and I are on the same level, we have different titles and different responsibilities, but we are on the same level socially as equals. If I support them to be their best then they can support me with their best.
I value the people that I work with; I choose to work with people that I think are exceptional people in their character, values, ethics and wisdom, with that I seek to have their insight on issues and ideas. A democratic ideology when it comes to leadership ensures a few principles when it comes to the group dynamic; that everyone is valued and has a voice.
My style of leadership would be that of a Democratic Servant, I am in a position to lead others and use their support and thoughts to guide us as a group to new heights. I think leadership needs to promote mutual equality and make sure that there is synergy on the team, that the whole is greater then the sum of all its parts.
